How COBRA works

If you're in a group that has at least 20 employees, you may be eligible for COBRA.

COBRA allows you to continue your current health coverage temporarily at the group rates you had through your employer.

Learn more about COBRA with this short video.

  • You're in a group with 20 or more employees
I don't know my group size
  • You must have been enrolled in your employer's health plan, and the health plan must continue to be in effect for active employees

Application Timeline
After you’re notified that you’re eligible for COBRA coverage, you have 60 days to elect COBRA. Within 45 days of electing COBRA coverage, you must pay the required premium.

Example of cost
You will be responsible for what you paid, plus what your company was paying for your health insurance (with an additional 2 percent administrative fee). The good news is that the government recently introduced a  subsidy  for involuntary terminations to help offset some of that cost. Here's how:

Your company paid$300
You paid$200
Total$500
Add 2% administration fee$10
Total with 65%  subsidy About $178 a month

What are the next steps?
Your employer has 30 days to notify its insurance company that you're eligible for COBRA. Then, the insurance company has 14 days to give you cost and benefit information.
